The tune equates the pain of heartbreak with something like the worst hangover. Directed by David Poag, the video's narrative does something similar, centering on a man who crawls out of bed as if shaking off the effects of a long night while Young appears to be telling the story in his scenes. But as the man goes about his day, hopping in the truck with his three-legged dog, it becomes clear that the rowdy bar scenes are a tortured memory from the night he truly hit bottom and lost everything.
Filmed in the tile-covered bathroom of an anonymous arena, the video below shines a light on the power of good acoustics, better songwriting and the connection between two chart-topping solo artists. Friends since the early 2010s, McGraw and Janson have collaborated both onstage and off, with Janson co-writing McGraws 2012 tribute to honky-tonk and horsepower, Truck Yeah, and McGraw returning the favor by guest starring on Jansons Messin with Jesus.
In its popular form, Little Big Town's hit "Better Man" places singer Karen Fairchild in the role of a woman whose pangs of loss after a breakup still can't overcome the understanding that she's better off alone. Singer-songwriter-musician Chase Bryan's cover of the Taylor Swift-penned tune inverts the idea, transforming it into a song of intense regret from the other perspective.
